USDA Requirements for Organic Certification

In order to qualify as an organic farm, several USDA criteria must be met:
1. Abstain from the application of prohibited materials (synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, et.) for three years.
2. Prohibit the use of genetically modified organisms and irradiation.
3. Employ positive soil building, conservation, manure management and crop rotation practices.
4. Provide outdoor access and pasture for livestock.
5. Sustain animals on 100% organic feed.
6. Avoid contamination during the processing of organic products.
7. Keep records of all operations.

When shopping at one of the many farmers markets throughout Chicagoland, look for the symbol that lets you know you are buying certified organic foods.
