The Chicago Tribune Showcases Organinc Farming

Was it the recent Family Farmed Expo at Navy Pier that prompted Thomas Washington to conduct further research on the organic farm in Illinois? Or was it an interest in community supported agriculture (CSA) and the implications to a health-conscious consumer that encouraged the Tribune to run a full-page cover story in Wednesday’s “Good Eating” section. Whatever the reason, highlighting what is best about the family farm and especially organic farming is a good thing.

The article reinforces the ideals and goals that Michael Ableman of Fairview Gardens shares: when you connect consumers with the farmers who grow the food, everybody benefits.
Washington writes of a farmer, Tom Ulick who owns King’s Hill Farm in Mineral Point, Wis. and the Polgaze family of Geneva. Ulick farms on 850 acres about an hour southwest of Madison. Each week he fills 750 boxes of produce that will be delivered to subscribers in Wisconsin and nearby northern Illinois.

Julie Polgaze hosts the Geneva drop-off site for Ulick’s produce boxes. “Knowing your farmer brings peace of mind,” she says. “Of course, this is a great way to feed my family good vegetables, but I also like the idea of being connected to a real farm. Tom is on a real mission to get more organic produce into the hands of people who wouldn’t normally consider eating it.”
